Acknowledgment of country

Polyglot acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live and create, and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. For more than 65,000 years, children and families have created and played here, and we are grateful to make our art on this country too.

Pram People at Barking Town Square (UK)

A moment in time for children who ride in prams, and the adults who push them.

What is Pram People?

It’s a celebration of community!

Pram pushers are invited to meet in Barking Town Square this August to follow curious and wonderful prompts through headphones, secret messages and even other participants.

Performers from Polyglot Theatre will delight and intrigue, adding to the fun as families weave among and around each other.

Visiting Barking for the first time from Australia, Pram People is offering the chance for residents to be part of this playful and welcoming community project, to connect with others and to celebrate the pram!

Hilarious, serious and surprisingly moving, this immersive, colourful spectacle will activate the Town Square in Barking, and reclaim the pram as an asset to public space and society as a whole.

Be part of the performance with your child or come and watch the live performances.

Please note: Professional photography and filming will be taking place at the event to document the project.

Polyglot Theatre’s 2024 UK tour of Pram People is supported by the Victorian Government through the Creative Victoria International Engagement program. The Creative Barking and Dagenham season is presented in partnership with Global Streets with funding from Arts Council England.

  • Buggies/prams are an important part of Pram People. All sizes and types are welcome!
  • Parents/carers who are wheelchair users are welcome to participate with their child on their lap. Families with children in wheelchairs are welcome to participate if you feel it is appropriate. The soundscape focuses on the experience of parents/carers with babies/toddlers and buggies/prams specifically, so it may not appeal to families with children older than 4 years in wheelchairs.
  • Adult participants (those who book in) will be given headphones to wear during the experience. The performance contains stories and prompts in English.
  • Other family members and friends are welcome to attend for free as observers, and watch the colourful spectacle unfold. Observers do not need to book a ticket.
  • Pram People will take place outdoors in daylight, on a paved surface. There will be no bright or flashing lights, although there will be amplified sound for observers.
  • Pram People celebrates the people who use buggies/prams. It is designed to be relaxed and stress-free. You can step out of the 60-minute experience at any time, and there will be a dedicated break-out space where you can take a break, feed your children or change a nappy.
  • A visual story to help your family prepare for the experience is coming soon.
  • Creative Barking and Dagenham is about local people choosing, creating and taking part in brilliant creative and cultural experiences. Creative Barking and Dagenham Limited is a new organisation and hosts the Arts Council England Creative People and Places National Portfolio project for the borough.
