Acknowledgment of country

Polyglot acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live and create, and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. For more than 65,000 years, children and families have created and played here, and we are grateful to make our art on this country too.

Children aged 4-9 and their adults are invited to help Polyglot Theatre make a brand new interactive show.

In the forest, tiny worlds meet giant worlds. Our imaginations breathe and our senses awaken. We talk underground. We whisper above. Listen. How does the forest call to you?

Children aged 4-9 and their adults are invited to help Polyglot Theatre make a brand new interactive show – Forest.

In these participatory, outdoor workshops, children and their adults will collaborate with Polyglot artists to explore the connection we have to forests, and the creatures and characters within. Together we will rediscover the Gresswell Forest bushland in Bundoora, creating and playing in the wild spaces among the trees.

These workshops are part of an extended creative process, and will contribute to the final show.

Venue

  • Meet at Greenwood Reserve Car Park in Bundoora at 10am or 12pm. As a group, we will make our way to the workshop space in the forest. Google Maps HERE.

Dates & Times

  • Saturday 10 May: 10am-11am; 12pm-1pm.
  • *Please note: Both sessions on Sat 10 May are being photographed. Families will be asked to sign a Polyglot release form on the day.

Bookings

  • These participatory workshops will take place outdoors. We create and play with respect for the natural spaces we are in, and the plants, insects and animals who live there.
  • Please check the weather, and dress appropriately. Please wear closed-toe shoes and full-length pants, and bring sunscreen, hats, raincoats and water bottles. Shoes and pants will keep you and your children safe from any critters that call the forest home.
  • There may be uneven ground surfaces, and unexpected weather conditions (sun, rain, wind).
  • Please contact Polyglot Theatre on info@polyglot.org.au or 03 9826 3301 if you have specific access requirements or questions.

Forest

  • Forest is part of Polyglot’s creative process to create a brand-new show for children and families. Here, children are experts and we follow their lead. Adult family members support their children to participate in the experience.

How to prepare

  • When you come to a Polyglot workshop, we recommend you wear comfortable clothing that allows you to enjoy moving. Remember that you have come for an adventure and there are many ways to begin finding your play. You are curious and this space is yours. Just as you might at the beach, do you take your time and dip your toe in to warm up, or do you run and jump right in? The worlds we set up welcome you to take your time and find your own way to your imaginative play; and our performers are there to join you, or play alongside you, and look after these worlds and their inhabitants. See you soon!

The Gresswell Nature Conservation Reserves, made up of Gresswell Forest, Gresswell Hill and Gresswell Habitat Link, protect 70 hectares of important flora and fauna habitat. Experience the area’s diverse vegetation and abundant wildlife on the reserves’ many walking trails, and explore this precious pocket of wilderness in Melbourne’s north-east.

Gresswell Forest Nature Conservation Reserve is the largest of the three Nature Conservation Reserves. Here you’ll find remnant River Red Gum woodland that’s home to many different bird and animal species. It is significant as one of the most intact examples of remnant Grassy Woodland in the Melbourne region Gresswell Forest Nature Conservation Reserve was first created as a buffer zone around a quarantine wing of the Mont Park Hospital in the early 20th century. The land was then excised from the hospital in 1976 and managed by La Trobe University from 1978 until 2011.

Gresswell Forest is perfect for families to enjoy together. In addition to the Nature Play area, the tracks are easy for young children to manage. In the early mornings and evenings, the forest is a cacophony of bird calls.
