Polyglot Theatre is a world-renowned contemporary theatre company based in Melbourne making exceptional arts experiences for children and families. Our unique brand of theatre encompasses a wide variety of forms and is shared with audiences everywhere, from the world’s most prestigious theatres to the football grounds of regional Australia.
Polyglot places children at the heart of our art. Our vision is of a world where children are powerful: artistically, socially and culturally. Access is central to our work, and we are committed to advocating for the right of all children to experience arts and culture, promoting the importance of children as a discerning audience from a young age.
We offer transformational and playful arts experiences that are alive and human in their content and connection. We relish the endless possibilities in theatre and performance for this very specific audience, providing scope for an extraordinary range of form and style.
Polyglot’s artistic and philosophical approach of child-centred practice has earned us a strong reputation at home and abroad as a leader in the Theatre for Young Audiences sector, celebrated for creating distinctive, participatory works that are playful and conceptually rigorous.
Polyglot tours extensively, with works presented across 18 countries and 5 continents and a strong national network. Since 2016 Polyglot has created, developed and presented 9 new works in nearly 200 performances across 150 locations to reach an audience in excess of 150,000.
Following the decision of our current Artistic Director and co-CEO, Sue Giles AM, to step down at the end of 2022 in order to dedicate her time to advocacy for global theatre for young audiences, the Board is seeking a new Artistic Director to join Executive Director and co-CEO Kath Fyffe and lead Polyglot Theatre’s next evolution.
Polyglot’s Artistic Director is a creative and cultural leader, responsible for Polyglot’s creative vision, and for developing and delivering a program of works aligned to the company ethos of participation, play and child-centred practice.
In partnership with Polyglot’s Executive Director, the Artistic Director is responsible for leading the development and delivery of Polyglot’s strategic mission and vision, and is jointly responsible for the culture of the organisation.
The Artistic Director has a strong command of the artistic process and demonstrated experience and commitment to best practice in the creation of contemporary artworks for children. They are highly collaborative, working closely with the Polyglot team to inspire and achieve a shared vision and goals, and seeking new creative partnerships and connections.
Polyglot is a rewarding company to work with, and is well positioned to embrace and support this change. The company has a strong and resilient organisational structure, a culture of care and welcome and an international reputation for innovative and bold work for children.
